Introspection: The Path to Awakening
Teachings from Master Xuanzang

The Illusion of Worldly Pursuits
How much time do you truly spend reflecting on your inner heart? What is it that you genuinely need? As you grow older, you strive tirelessly to achieve your goals. You may have attained academic success, a stable career, wealth, status, and a loving family. You might feel that you have achieved everything you desired and that your life should be without regrets. Yet, deep within your heart, do you not always feel that something is still missing?
Desires are truly endless. We pass through the cycles of birth, aging, sickness, and death, and eventually, death arrives. Is this all there is to a human life? Where do we go after we die? These questions often surge into our hearts. While the human world cannot provide the answers, the Buddha’s teachings offer a clear path to understanding. When you realise what is illusory, you will understand what is real. When you comprehend the fleeting nature of human life, you will naturally seek to pursue eternal life. When you see the true face of the six realms of rebirth, you will vow to seek the path of liberation—a state beyond aging, sickness, and death.
The Truth Behind Our Relationships
People often believe that life is inherently filled with , anger, sorrow, and happiness. Consequently, they drift through the six realms of rebirth, experiencing endless cycles of suffering. They remain unaware that within their own bodies, there exists a true self—our original nature. This true self is not subject to sorrow or suffering; it is a state of eternal joy, true self, and purity. Many believe that a lifelong marriage is the ultimate happiness. While this is true according to worldly laws, the factual truth is that we are often merely settling emotional entanglements from past lives. Similarly, many believe that having successful children is a way to bring honour to one's ancestors. While this is true in the worldly sense, the factual truth is that children are often here to repay a kindness or settle a debt from the past.
- Everything is external:
- Your spouse, children, and all those around you are external to your true nature.Everything is changing:
- Nothing in this world is permanent, yet we mistakenly believe that things should remain as they are forever. The cycle of suffering: We grow up and receive education in this world, believing it to be the right path, yet we continue to suffer through the six realms of rebirth, tasting the bitterness of birth, aging, sickness, and death, and enduring the relentless storms of life.
Rediscovering the True Self
You must know that within you lies an unchanging true self, yet you have left this precious treasure buried at the very bottom of your heart. Only by accepting Buddhist education can you begin to reflect, observe your inner heart, and understand the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way. You must deeply repent for the ignorance and mistakes of the past. Through purification, and then more purification, and through diligent practice, you can finally find your way back to your true self. Do not remain lost in the beautiful dreams of this world, unable to wake up, only to drift into the next dream, playing different roles in a cycle you do not understand. Only when you recognise that this life is a dream do you have the opportunity to wake up and reclaim your true face.
The Direct Path to the
Practising the Buddha’s teachings is different from the varied experiences of worldly life. It is a path that points directly to the heart, leading to liberation and the realisation of one's true nature—the state of natural emptiness that is the original appearance of all beings. The Pure Land method of chanting the Buddha’s name is a compassionate gift from Namo Amituofo, a direct route opened for all beings to enter the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. When you chant the Buddha’s name, you must settle your heart upon the Buddha-name. Look inward, and do not look for the faults of others. Those who have realised their true nature may not be looking directly at the world, but their six roots are pure, and they are clearly aware of all situations around them.
The Power of the Awakened Being
Why can such a person know things that others do not, and perform tasks that seem impossible for human strength? It is because every cell in their body can manifest as the . The pure Body is where the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way reside. It is one with all sentient beings in the Dharma realm. We are all originally one; the infinite suffering beings are me, and I am one of the infinite suffering beings. Therefore, one knows all things and understands all principles; everything one does is for the sake of all beings. For those who have realised their true nature, every pore and every hair follicle possesses the functions of :
- Eyes:
- They can see the situation of people and things around them.Ears:
- They can hear external sounds, as well as the inner voices and needs of their own cells, and even the cries of suffering beings.Nose:
- They can perceive all kinds of scents.Tongue:
- They can taste all kinds of flavours.Body:
- They can feel all sensations of cold, heat, warmth, and pain.Mind: They can know the various thoughts of the beings passing by.
This is the sensitive awareness of the true self, which is the original face of every person. The direction of your practice should be to find this true self, let the true self be the master, manifest great , pity all beings, save yourself and save others, and be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss for ultimate liberation.
A Guide for Introspection
What should you reflect upon? You must know that the Buddha’s teachings are an internal study. Learning from the Buddha requires you to demand more of yourself, not others. Observe your own shortcomings. You must change yourself; do not demand that others change their ways. Be proactive in your practice and learn to be grateful to others, rather than passively receiving the grace of Namo Amituofo, the guidance of teachers, and the service of the fourfold assembly. You have obtained a rare human body. What is it for? It is not for indulging in emotional entanglements or merely waiting for aging, sickness, and death to conclude your life. It is for using the false to cultivate the true. Nourish your body with simple food, and through practice—purification, and then more purification—remain unmoved by external conditions.
Ask yourself these questions daily: Have you done good deeds, spoken good words, and thought good thoughts? Do you use language wisely, knowing when to remain silent and when to speak? What are you thinking? What are you chanting? What have you realised? How much have you changed your habits and ego-attachment? Are you still creating new mistakes? As the days, minutes, and seconds pass, how much diligent effort have you made? Have you been lazy or indulgent? Has your practice progressed? Is your heart firmly settled on the path? Are you protecting your body, speaking well, and thinking well? Have you let go of arrogance, the comparison of gains and losses, and your ego-attachment? Or are you still suffering? All these things that should not exist in the first place come from illusion; why cling to them so tightly? Let go of worldly affairs, and you will find freedom in both body and mind.
