This is a record of an interview with Mo Gan, a spirit who participated in the spread of the pandemic and sought deliverance at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre in Australia. He now resides in the . This account reflects upon his life approximately 1,200 years ago. Recorded by the chief writer, Shi Fa, on June 28, 2021.
Mo Gan speaks:
". I am Mo Gan. There is a reason why I came here. This place declared that it would help with the pandemic, which meant they were intending to block us. When I was in the Demon Realm, I was most famous for my speed. Once there was a task, I would handle it immediately, completing it at the very first opportunity. That is simply my nature, and the demon children and grandchildren around me are the same.
Upon hearing the message issued by the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre, I immediately led a large group of my demon followers here. As soon as we arrived, we locked onto our target—Practitioner Su, who was emitting the most brilliant light in this place. Once I gave the signal, we charged straight at Practitioner Su. Our goal, of course, was to implant the virus of the pandemic into his body. We moved with such speed that even the protectors here could not stop us at first; only some of the demon followers trailing behind were blocked.
Once we closed in, we immediately began to spread the pandemic virus. For an ordinary person, symptoms like shortness of breath would appear instantly. But this Practitioner Su we attacked was different. He only showed the most basic symptoms: coughing, sneezing, and a swollen throat. This shocked us. We had brought the fastest, most acute pandemic virus; how could this human body withstand it? Everywhere else we went, people were filled with panic, unease, and fear, but Practitioner Su here was fearless and undaunted. He even smiled and welcomed us. We had never encountered such a situation before. For a moment, we did not know how to react.
Just as we were hesitating, the Buddha-light continuously shone upon us. I felt our aggressive demon nature constantly receding, and the virulence of the virus we brought also weakened. Before I could even react to these changes, I heard a voice calling my name. How could they know my name here? Clang, clang, clang—the sound was so loud. I was pulled out by a gravitational force and sucked into a very bright place. Once I was brought there, my demon nature could not function at all. I went from being a demon leader to a little lamb. I was not used to this change in my heart; I was even afraid that others would see it. I used to speak with a booming voice and particularly looked down on those who were gentle. Now, why had my speech become so soft? I hoped I did not sound too effeminate.
Fortunately, my demon children and grandchildren were also brought in; otherwise, if they saw me like this, they would surely mock me, and I would never be able to hold my head up again. Now, they are just like me. I am the 'lamb father,' and they are the little lambs. I never imagined I would see a day like this.
My name is Mo Gan. I participated in the spread of this pandemic. The Demon King knew I liked to perform, so he gave me the opportunity to join this activity and let me show my skills. I accepted it willingly. I locked onto several locations; as long as there was a crack in human nature, we could enter immediately, take effect immediately, cause organs to fail immediately, and lead to death immediately. The human world fell into panic because of this, and that was the result we wanted. The more it happened, the more we felt we had achieved our goal. This was our judgment upon the human world, and they could not blame us.
Now that the pandemic is so rampant, humanity only wants to use vaccines to prevent it. Hahaha—I want to tell everyone: the problem lies in the heart, not in whether vaccines can prevent it. This is the collective of humanity; humanity is currently receiving retribution and should be repenting.
Humanity is always 'clever' in their own way, arrogant in everything, and self-centred. They do not know that humanity is only a tiny corner of the universe and cannot resist the many invisible forces at play.
I am Mo Gan. When I first arrived in the Demon Realm, I was just a junior demon, knowing nothing. As I followed other demon crowds and controlled humans, my demon nature grew stronger and stronger. It took me several hundred years to become a demon capable of controlling humans on my own. The people I controlled were those who liked to research, those who thought they were smart, and those who were arrogant. I controlled them and laughed at their stupidity. Their faces had already been 'occupied' by us, yet they still thought they were amazing. It was truly laughable.
This time, the world was in a panic, and we found it very interesting, so of course, we had to participate, leading the intense virus to cause death. We originally had many planned actions, but they were all halted after we arrived here. We were repeatedly cleansed and transformed by the Buddha-light, and only then could I remember my past.
I have been in the Demon Realm for 1,200 years. In my past life, I was a geomancer. My grandfather was already known as a 'geomancy immortal,' and my father was even more capable, accurately reading feng shui. Through certain causal conditions, my father took over a Taoist temple and became its caretaker. Ever since he took the position, the temple was bustling with incense, and many people came to ask for guidance. My father would use the most sincere heart to help everyone resolve their doubts. He prepared a tortoise shell and several copper coins for people to use when asking questions. This tortoise was two thousand years old, exceptionally spiritual, and had a special connection with my father, which is why it ended up in his hands for him to use. My father used this shell to help many people, which could be considered the fulfillment of the tortoise's own wish to help others.
One day, a local bully came to ask for guidance. He intended to seize other territories and wanted to ask which day would be the most suitable. When the bully sat in front of my father, my father already knew his intention, so he closed his eyes. No matter what the bully asked, my father did not open his eyes. The bully was furious, thinking my father looked down on him. In reality, my father did not look down on him; he simply did not want to help the bully create karma. The bully left only one sentence: he would definitely make my father pay. My father did not take it to heart, believing that life and death are but a thin line, and as long as one is alive, one should do good for the day.
A week later, evening came and my father did not return home. My mother was anxious and asked the village head to help search for him. Everyone searched through the night, and it was only near dawn the next day that they found my father's body downstream in the river. It was obvious that my father had been beaten; there were stone impact marks on his head, and his body had traces of being bitten by fish. The villagers were heartbroken because my father had helped them so much, and my mother wept bitterly.
When my father passed away, I was at an age where I understood a little—about seven years old. I could see what was happening in the adult world. When the bully came that day, because he spoke so loudly, I had peeked out from inside the temple. I saw with my own eyes the bully threatening my father before leaving in a rage. I knew in my heart that my father's fate must have been the work of that bully. I remembered the bully's face, and the hatred in my heart began to grow.
I decided to follow my father's path and become a feng shui geomancer. I wanted to avenge my father; I believed that such a good man should not have left in such a way. I studied diligently using all the manuscripts my father left behind, and I also took up the tortoise shell he had used. I made my heart quiet to learn, but no matter how quiet I became, that hatred in my heart kept burning in my chest.
When the villagers knew I had taken over my father's work at the temple, they came to ask for guidance one after another. But they all noticed that the tortoise shell in my hand, which was originally deep green, had turned deep black. The answers I gave the villagers all carried a strange magnetic field. Over time, the villagers stopped coming to the temple.
Decades after I took over the temple, one day, the bully walked in swaggering. My mouth curled into a smile involuntarily; I knew I had waited for this day. For these years, I had been honing myself just for this moment.
When the bully sat in front of me, he did not know that I was the child of the temple caretaker he had harmed to death years ago. After the bully sat down, he asked the same question he had asked my father. I looked at the tortoise shell calmly and encouraged the bully to do exactly as he wanted. I told him he could go seize the territory in a few days and that he would definitely succeed. The bully was overjoyed after hearing my words. At that time, I had bribed the opposing bully who was competing for the territory, telling him to kill him with his own hands and give him the most miserable death possible. I used a lot of money to bribe the other party, and he agreed immediately.
A few days later, I received news of the bully's death. I sat at the temple table and let out a long howl to the sky, finally slamming my head against the table with all my might, dying inside the temple. My heart of hatred accompanied me. My was sucked towards a place, entering a dark palace—that was the Demon Palace. I knew I had arrived at the Demon Palace. I did not repent, because I felt this was the result of the karma I had created myself.
In the days at the Demon Palace, I cultivated my demon nature. Looking at this world, the people I looked down on the most were those with combative hearts, so I would control them, making them rise and making them fall.
Not long ago, I joined the ranks of spreading the pandemic, leading my demon followers to exert our influence, just wanting to teach humanity a lesson. I never expected that out of curiosity, I would come to the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre, be subdued, and sit on a lotus seat to listen to the sutras. My originally hateful heart gradually calmed down, and a warm current continuously flowed into my heart. This is the of the Buddha for us demons. Even though we have created such deep karma, the Buddha is still willing to accept us. I am truly grateful.
I repent for my intrusion upon of Practitioner Su. I cannot bear this sin, and I hope Practitioner Su can forgive me. I am also grateful for the opportunity to start over.
