The Power of Your Vow
The Twentieth Letter of Venerable KaiLin
September 8, 2017
The Strength of Your Resolve
The strength of your vow determines the distance you can travel on this path of practice. A powerful, unwavering belief acts as a shield, helping you break through all demon obstacles and overcome the layers of your latent habits or bad character traits. When your resolve is firm, you possess the inner fortitude to navigate the challenges that inevitably arise during your spiritual journey.
Your initial resolve is always pure, white, and unblemished. It is a state of singular, focused belief. If you can preserve this purity without allowing it to be struck down or diminished, and if you can maintain this persistence over a long period, you will certainly attain the Buddha's path. This consistency is the true measure of a dedicated practitioner.
The Trap of Conformity
Every monk and lay practitioner who studies the Buddha's teachings enters the Buddha's gate under their own unique Causal Conditions. Upon taking refuge in the Three Jewels, each person holds a heart of deep respect for the Buddha's teachings. Having personally experienced the benefits of these teachings, they initially possess an unshakable faith. However, many eventually lose their way. They begin to doubt themselves and lose their ability to discern what is correct, often because they:
- Follow the prevailing trends of the crowd rather than the Truth.
- Allow their vow to shift according to the opinions of others.
- Change their fundamental thinking to match current social fashions.
- Lose the ability to judge the validity of a path through their own wisdom.
By succumbing to these pressures, they lose the initial resolve that once guided them, becoming nothing more than people who drift aimlessly with the tide.
Walking the Extraordinary Path
You must frequently contemplate your initial resolve. Constantly examine your current actions and thoughts to see if you have deviated from your original purpose or if you are still moving straight ahead. To attain the Buddha's path, you must be willing to walk a path that others may not understand. Regardless of how others speak of you or how they may mock your dedication, you must continue forward, anchored firmly in your vow and your practice.
This is the ultimate test of your resolve. To achieve the supreme , you must be prepared to:
- Perform the actions of an extraordinary person.
- Walk the path that few are willing to tread.
- Remain steadfast despite the noise and criticism of the world.
- Commit yourself fully to your vows through your daily conduct.
A Commitment to Truth
I urge all practitioners to make a sincere commitment to their own vows. Let your actions reflect your words, and let your conduct be guided by honesty and integrity. By practising step by step, with a sincere and honest heart, we can all attain the Buddha's path together. May we cultivate the fragrance of the Bodhi lotus, travel together to the of Ultimate Bliss, and attain rebirth with and ease.
