The Reality of Spiritual Attachment: A Master’s Reflection
An Interview with the Spirit of Venerable Master Chin Kung (Part 2)
Recorded at the Western Dharma-Nature Land of the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre, Australia
This is a record of an interview with the spirit of Venerable Master Chin Kung, who now resides in the of the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre in Australia. This account reflects upon his life and his current understanding of the spiritual realms. Recorded by the chief writer, Venerable HaiZe, on August 10, 2022.
Venerable Master Chin Kung speaks:
"Namo Amituofo. What I am saying here is merely the beginning. How could the vastness of the Pure Land be explained in just a few words? I spent sixty years lecturing on the sutras, and yet that was like taking only a single ladle of water from the ocean. How could I possibly explain it all in just a few hours? Everyone, please just bear with me and listen; understand as much as you can. When I was alive, I reminded everyone time and again, but most people let my words go in one ear and out the other. Now that I am no longer in the human world, it is fortunate that this spirit of mine was saved by Practitioner Su—Su Fo—otherwise, you would never have had the opportunity to hear these words from me.
The Universe as a Classroom
There are no longer any formal textbooks for me. It is not like the old days, where I would refer to a specific treatise or the writings of an ancestral master. Now, there is only the spirit of Chin Kung. What are the 'teaching materials' now? The entire universe—everything you see and hear before you—is a textbook. How could a mere book contain the entirety of the ?
The preciousness of the Buddha’s teachings lies in the fact that everything is contained within them. Because the essence of the Dharma is emptiness, and emptiness can contain the ten thousand phenomena. Everything you see, hear, and perceive is the Dharma. Why do we call it the Dharma? If there were no problems among sentient beings, where would the Dharma come from? Why do the mountains, rivers, earth, forests, animals, insects, oceans, and even humanity, the six realms, and the ten Dharma realms exist? All of these are within the ten Dharma realms, within the Dharma itself, and this includes the Four Sacred Realms.
The Freedom of the Spirit
Once this topic is opened, it is truly endless. When I had a physical body, it was a great burden. I could only communicate with the outside world through my six roots. If I had purified myself, I could have seen more, heard more, and reacted faster, but that was the extent of it. Now that I no longer have a body, this spirit is finally at ease. Fortunately, I was saved by Practitioner Su—Su Fo—and now, here in the Western Dharma-Nature Land, what I see and hear is far more profound than before. Truly, if one is not careful, a single thought can lead one to become one with all things.
The thought at the moment of death determines where one goes. I have said this many times, have I not? But without witnessing it with my own eyes, I was merely repeating the words of others or what I had read in books. Now, however, this spirit sees it clearly! It is no wonder that Practitioner Su—Su Fo—can explain the spiritual aspects of existence so thoroughly; his eyes are clear, he has realised his true nature, and he can see worlds that are invisible to the physical eyes of others. Now, I see it too. Truly, a human body is precious! But if your thoughts are not pure, the outcome is quite tragic. Have you ever thought about the fact that if you think of a cow at the moment of death, you will be reborn as a cow? Or an ant, a blade of grass, a butterfly, or even an attached spirit? It is no wonder that Namo Amituofo urges everyone to chant the Buddha-name continuously, twenty-four hours a day, without interruption. Impermanence can arrive at any moment. Only by not being led astray by the phenomena of impermanence and by remaining within the Buddha-name can one reach the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. However, this is easier said than done; one must put in the work to practise chanting to attain such a level of skill.
The Reality of Spiritual Attachment
The term 'attached spirit' may sound unfamiliar to many of you, but in fact, every one of us has attachments. Do you have thoughts? Do you have reflections? Who dares to say they have no thoughts or reflections? If that is the case, then I tell you, you certainly have attached spirits. This is something I have seen with my own eyes; I cannot speak falsely, as it is a grave sin for a monastic to lie. Moreover, the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre is the dwelling place of Namo Amituofo—it is a Buddha-land. Every word I speak is scattered into the air, and it is not only humans who can hear it! Many ghost deities, Dharma protectors, and even beings from the demon realms are here, as are the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. To lie here would be a sin upon a sin! I will not speak of what I have not seen, but what I have seen, I must speak of. How could I not? What I said before was based on text, but what I say now is based on what I have witnessed with my own eyes.
I mentioned earlier: have you ever thought about whether you will become a cow, a horse, or an animal after you die? With the spirit of a human, one might end up wearing the 'skin' of a cow, a horse, or an animal, or even become mere dust particles in the air. Floating ghosts or lonely wandering spirits—these attached spirits are what we call beings of the spirit realm. They were once human. Now, they have no body, but they still have reflections, thoughts, ideas, and . When you are thinking or reflecting, if you resonate with them—if you have the same thoughts, ideas, and feelings—these beings can enter your body. I touched upon this yesterday; this is what we call external attachment.
The Internal Burden
What is terrifying is the existence of beings already within —the ghosts. Each being looks different, and their speech and actions vary. We say the body is composed of the four elements: earth, water, fire, and wind. In reality, these four elements are combined by past and . This means we carry the memories of our past lives within us. In this lifetime, apart from what is destined before the King of Hell, many things are triggered by our own body, speech, and mind. The events and memories we experienced in past lives are all contained within the body, including the beings we were connected to—our parents, teachers, and from countless lifetimes. They exist within your body and can be awakened at any time by resonant thoughts to seek revenge. When this happens, the body suffers from aging, illness, and even mental problems. Therefore, one must be extremely cautious with every thought, word, and action.
Listening to Practitioner Su—Su Fo—give Dharma talks here has been very rewarding. Practitioner Su—Su Fo—mentions many spiritual aspects that are not found in textbooks or treatises. I will list a key point for each section so that the topic does not drift, as there is simply too much to cover. I must first say what Practitioner Su—Su Fo—wishes for me to say, so I must start with the concept of spiritual attachment. If I do not explain this clearly, you will be lost.
The Mechanics of Aging and Illness
Simply put, attachments can be divided into external and internal. The external part is what I just mentioned—attracted by thoughts and reflections. The internal part involves past and the actions of this lifetime. Regardless, it is spiritual beings acting upon our bodies. What we call aging and illness are closely related to these attachments. The body is visible to the physical eye, but what about the spirit? It is invisible. When you suddenly fall ill or when the body slowly ages, you have no control over it. If it is not the manifestation of karma, it is the work of attached spirits. Alas, there are far too many beings inside the body!
As you all know, my two legs were very heavy and stiff. The attached spirits inside were layered upon one another. There were my own karmic creditors, as well as the beings connected to the Dharma protectors and followers around me. Of course, there were also various ghosts I had encountered in different countries; those with karmic affinity could all attach themselves to me. Once they entered my body, they did not want to leave. They piled up layer upon layer, causing my legs to become extremely heavy, yet I still had to walk! I believe this is 'bearing the suffering of sentient beings'—the four virtues of the Avatamsaka Sutra: using conditions skillfully, maintaining proper demeanour, being gentle and straightforward, and bearing the suffering of sentient beings.
The Ultimate Deliverance
To bear the suffering of sentient beings, one must truly have the ability. Without it, it is genuine suffering. That kind of pain cannot be shared with others; one must bear it in one's own body, telling oneself: 'It is worth it! It is worth it! As long as sentient beings can leave suffering behind, all the pain I endure is worth it.' The most ultimate way for sentient beings to leave suffering is to take them to the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. That was what I thought at the time. However, the reality was that my own four elements were separating, and I could not even reach the Western Land myself, so how could I take them there? To truly help the attached spirits on my body and legs leave suffering, one must take them to the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. If you cannot go, they cannot go either.
Where do these beings go after they leave the body? Now, I see it clearly. Many beings come to find Practitioner Su—Su Fo—to ask him to perform to send them to the West. Practitioner Su—Su Fo—accepts them, first inviting them to enter the Western Dharma-Nature Land of the temple. By making vows and chanting the Buddha-name, they can enter the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. The Western Dharma-Nature Land is the intermediate station for entering the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. I have seen this in the Dharma-Nature Land, and in my heart, I silently thank Practitioner Su—Su Fo.
A Lesson in Humility
Speaking of this, I feel ashamed, and it may surprise those who knew me. Everyone thought that because I lectured on the sutras so well, I would be able to return home to the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss upon my passing. In truth, everyone overestimated me. Although I lectured well, I did not enable the beings who listened to the sutras to return to the West. I disappointed everyone; I did not return to the West. Alas! It is fortunate that I was saved; otherwise, the suffering would be endless! Our meeting was merely a gathering and dispersing of karmic conditions.
In fact, my attachments were not just on my legs; they were all over my body. After I stopped lecturing, my body aged, my face shrank, I became thin, and I could not eat. These were all attachments—in my stomach, causing a loss of appetite; on my face, causing it to deform. The attachments on my hands made them weak; I could not even hold a brush to write. These signs of aging were not spoken of, so you did not know or see them, as I was no longer in front of the cameras. However, this is the most concrete example of spiritual attachment. I must use myself as an example to tell you all. Do not be frightened; these are things you do not usually hear about! Of course, that I could not walk was also expected.
The Coldness of the Ghost Realm
I was sensitive to the cold; those who knew me were aware of this. It was because of the many attachments. Since they are beings of the ghost realm, their 'yin' energy is quite heavy, and their attachment to my body made me feel cold. You might ask: 'How could a venerable master who lectured on the sutras for so long have such heavy yin energy?' I brought it upon myself! Before I blocked Practitioner Su—Su Fo—I was indeed healthy and robust. After that, my thoughts were wrong. Once that thought arose, the situation became serious. Attachments entered, and even many beings from the demon realms came in. Over several years, layer upon layer, my physical body could not withstand it. With so many attachments, the yin energy became heavy. Sometimes, my stubbornness or certain views were like stones; this was truly not how a practitioner of the Buddha’s teachings should be. This was my state in my later years. If I trace it back further—I am looking at my past now, like watching a movie screen—I will look and speak as I go.
From my birth in Anhui, China, until I was about six, I was quite simple. I was a child with innocent thoughts and no evil intentions. At six, I began attending a private school, and my thoughts began to multiply. With the memorisation, homework, and interactions with other children, my thoughts increased. At that time, I already had attachments—mostly beings of my own age. People usually think of ghosts as adults, but there are many infant spirits and child spirits. They are often overlooked. In fact, these infant or child spirits mostly exist in the world of children, so the number of child spirits gathered in the private school was quite large. This is 'birds of a feather flock together.' I see them now, still in that space from the past. So, at that time, whenever you had a thought, if a child spirit found your thought interesting, they would attach themselves to you. You would be 'attached.' I was attached to at that time, too. I see those children attaching themselves to people now; they are curious, following you on your face, on your eyes. But they are all quite kind, with no evil intent.
The Chaos of War
Later, I experienced the chaos of war. The space of war was filled with many fleeing ghosts. Humans were fleeing, and even those lonely wandering spirits were fleeing. We cried and were sorrowful, and they cried and were sorrowful too. This space is truly inconceivable! So, at that time, if a thought of sadness appeared, ghosts who were just as sad as you would follow you. They were not just beside you; they entered directly into your body, and your sadness would be doubled. So, in fact, it was not entirely my own sadness; it was compounded by the sadness of other ghosts. You manifested it together. Oh my! Seeing this part now, I am truly astonished!
The joys and sorrows of the war era—anything could happen. My mood was quite complex, longing for stability. These beings were the same, so those with similar moods would enter your body to meet you. It is truly unexpected! So, from that time on, my body had many attachments. Some entered and stayed; others would leave. It was as if your body was a place where attachments could come and go. Oh my! One truly has no autonomy!
Student Life and Attachments
Afterward, although it was still war, I did not forget to learn. I had to go to school, live in dormitories, and eat and wear whatever was available at school. At that time, I learned what I could. We were all struggling for food and clothing, so we learned what we could. Every student had a different personality. Students who thought more had more attachments because there were many student ghosts around, and they would find you! Those who were simpler, a bit dull, and thought less lived happier lives because they had fewer attachments. I was in the middle—somewhat intelligent, learning, and capable of reflection. So, I see now that I had attachments, especially when I was thinking and using my brain; they would enter my head, shrink, and squeeze together.
(Note: The Master is looking at his own past, saying: 'I am looking at it all the way up, and I will say as much as I see.')
Later, when everyone was calling to go to Taiwan, we prepared a few things to bring. One had to have some money on one's person. With a little given by teachers and a little by friends, I went to Taiwan with everyone. Along the way, I see now that there were so many lonely wandering spirits—on the sea, on the land, everywhere! At that time, I saw people wandering and fleeing. Now, I see the world in that space that was invisible to the physical eye; there were so many ghosts fleeing as well. It is pitiful; no one performed Chao Du for them! This reminds me that Practitioner Su—Su Fo—can break through space to enter these realms, bringing the Buddha-light and the Buddha-name into those spaces to save them, giving them a chance to escape. This is a virtuous act! It is truly saving sentient beings; otherwise, they have no way to leave, even though this is their fate. So, Practitioner Su, Su Fo! You must continue the work of performing Chao Du for beings in these spaces. There are too many spaces! Just the beings fleeing from war—I see so many now, and that is not even counting other wars. You cannot stop performing Chao Du! Sentient beings are too miserable!
The Three Teachers
After arriving in Taiwan, I had to find a place to settle and worked several jobs. Every workplace had beings; whatever kind of place it was, that kind of being existed there, just like in the human world. Fortunately, I loved to read and did not fear loneliness, so I did not speak much. Otherwise, speaking more, having more thoughts, and having more delusions—these are all reasons for attracting attachments. It truly requires purification. In fact, along the way, I had already accumulated many beings on my body. However, because I was young, in my twenties, I still had the energy and did not feel anything unusual. My body generally seemed fine.
As for what happened later, I think you all know a little bit. I met three teachers: Professor Fang Dongmei, Master Zhangjia, and later, Lay Practitioner Li Bingnan—Teacher Li. These three teachers were my benefactors. I went back and forth to their residences for classes. I see now that on the way there, there were many ghosts waiting for me to walk by. They followed me to listen to the teachers' lectures; that is, many ghosts—beings of the ghost realm—also attended class with me. When Professor Fang Dongmei spoke, some would sit beside me, some would stand respectfully, and some would circle around. But I knew nothing of it; I only knew to listen attentively. This is the world of the spirit; if your eyes are not open, you cannot see it. Now, I see it all.
Furthermore, I also saw some beings simply enter my body. Some were in my eyes, some in my head. Wherever I went, they followed; they were like a part of my body. They entered my body quite easily—'whoosh'—they were inside, without anyone knowing. Fortunately, I was young and had the energy to withstand the cold energy on them. Taking them to listen to the lectures could be considered doing a good deed.
The Light of the Masters
Next, let us speak of Master Zhangjia. Alas! Incredible! He was truly a high monk of his generation. I now see that Master Zhangjia was surrounded by beings, and he also had attachments on his body. He was bearing the suffering of sentient beings, especially in those two legs. Many were there because they admired him, followed him, and listened to him teach. Ghosts and beings of the ghost realm—it seems that no matter what you do, they will attach themselves. The best way is to perform Chao Du and send them to the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss.
Similarly, my own body was the same. Some who liked listening to Master Zhangjia speak followed me to listen; some who did not want to listen turned and left, or left because they could not stay in my body. These attached spirits also had personalities. Of course, there were many who liked listening to the sutras. So, when Master Zhangjia was alive, I already had attached spirits on my body who liked listening to the Dharma. That could also be considered bearing the suffering of sentient beings.
Then there was Teacher Li—what you call Teacher Li Gong. He was a master of Confucian studies, with a thin frame that looked quite robust. He also had attachments around him, but they kept a distance from him. Teacher Li had light on his body, and Master Zhangjia also had light. At that time, I did not have much light. However, I was quite kind and had no evil intentions; I was just more prone to reflection. Because I wanted to understand, I had many beings attached to me who also liked to reflect.
The Power of the Dharma
In those days, most of the beings following me were those who liked to learn and listen to the Dharma. Some were in my head, some around my throat, and some around my chest, but they had no evil intent toward me. Now, I can read their thoughts. At that time, while working and attending the teacher's classes, I realised the workplace was also full of beings. Oh my! Beings were everywhere.
Later, I became a monastic and received the . At the ordination altar, there were so many attached spirits! It turns out that when receiving the Precepts, many beings also received them together. The power of the Buddha’s teachings is truly inconceivable. After receiving the Precepts in the spirit realm, they also had the status of monastics, just like humans.
Next, I stayed at several temples, hoping for a stable place to stay. Every place, every temple, had many beings coming and going. The beings in temples are quite special; there are many ghost spirits of monastics. After they passed away, they had nowhere to go, so they stayed where they were. They did not chant the Buddha-name, did not know they could go to the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss, and even if they chanted, they might not have chanted correctly or been able to go. These are all beings in space waiting for salvation. I see them now, which means they are still in that space. They must rely on Su Fo to open their space so they can have a chance to be saved.
The Importance of Purification
I spent several years at the Jingmei Library. Even the library had beings; they were everywhere. I worked diligently, and when people came to borrow books with questions, I gave them answers. You know Director Han Ying, right? The old director—she had many attachments and passed away due to illness. Illness is always due to karma and attachments. Now I know that illness is related to attachments; at that time, I only knew about karma. Of course, I also had attachments, but most remained still. After all, I lived a simple life, doing good deeds, and had no bad thoughts.
Later, I went overseas to spread the Dharma. There were many overseas Chinese among the beings abroad. Wherever I went, they followed. We have our space, and they have theirs, but what connects space to space? Thought-power! Thoughts and thought-power can pierce through space. The more purified the thoughts, the more they can penetrate space. This is like you interviewing beings; the interviewer must also be purified. Without purification, you cannot receive messages from beings in space. This principle is the same. Among the overseas beings, besides many overseas Chinese, there were Westerners, Chinese, and various beings from everywhere. It was clear they had no one to rely on. I travelled to many places, and wherever I went, they followed, circling around me.
At that time, the attachments on my legs gradually increased. Beings like to attach themselves to places according to their own preferences. Some like to follow you as you walk, so they like to attach to your legs; some like to listen to you teach, so they stay at the corners of your mouth, ears, and throat. However, although I had attachments, I did not feel the strain. Perhaps because I was a monastic and kept the Precepts, I had Dharma protectors who provided some protection.
I had no worries, seeking neither fame nor profit, only hoping to pass the Dharma to everyone. That was what Chin Kung thought at the time. This thought was a virtuous one, so my spirit and complexion were quite good. Of course, I met many overseas students and overseas Chinese, many of whom began to learn and chant the Buddha-name because of me.
(Note: At this point, many beings, hearing the Master speak, crowded closer. The Master asked everyone not to get too close, to stay a little further away. If they are too close to the Master, it is difficult for the Master to speak, and the beings cannot hear, so he asked them to stay back.)
The Master said: 'He has no Buddha-name, so the beings easily crowd close. My energy is not enough; I am not as full of vitality as when the interview first started.'
The disciple asked: 'He is interviewing, he is speaking, how can he still maintain chanting the Buddha-name?'
The Master said: 'Of course I can! While speaking, one can also have the Buddha-name continuously.'
The disciple asked in surprise: 'That skill is very difficult to achieve!'
The Master said: 'One must practice the skill in daily life to have the skill. If you do not practice in daily life, how can you have the skill?'
The Importance of Dedication
Later, several Pure Land societies were established overseas to give everyone a place to gather, distribute Dharma Jewels, and listen to the sutras. Everyone needs a spiritual reliance, and Namo Amituofo is, of course, their greatest reliance. Entering the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss is also everyone's wish. But there must be a cohesive force in the middle, and Chin Kung took on that role at the time. This is spreading the Dharma, so I spent most of my time abroad then.
Many overseas ghost beings were also curious to see what we were doing, so they stayed there! At that time, I also had some overseas attached spirits on my body because they had been wandering outside for too long, so when they saw Chin Kung, they swarmed in. When I was spreading the Dharma and saw everyone coming to listen, my heart became more settled. Now I see that those ghost beings were also listening to the Dharma together. Many overseas wanderers, studying and working, are actually very lonely and miss their hometowns. At this time, it also triggers the karmic creditors within their bodies to manifest. If these wanderers have simple thoughts and are not devious, they have fewer attachments. Being honest is still better.
When I lectured on the sutras then, besides humans, there were many ghosts around and at the scene. It was fine if I could not see them and did not know, but seeing them now, I was truly shocked. Pay attention! How important it is to lecture on the sutras! Not only do humans listen, but other beings without bodies also listen to the sutras together.
When I chanted sutras and prostrated to the Buddha, many attached spirits also chanted and prostrated with me. Some attached spirits gradually left, which was quite gratifying. I did not know of their existence at the time. Looking at it now, they all received my dedication of merit. They were very happy, beaming with , as if they had won the lottery. Dedication is very important; it is truly very important. Some beings did not manage to receive the merit and were very sad, crying in sorrow. Oh my! It does not matter; I will continue to speak. The merit of lecturing on the sutras will be dedicated to everyone.
Why does everyone scramble for merit? Why do these ghost beings in the spirit realm scramble for merit? They have no chance to gain merit because how can one perform meritorious deeds without a body? Yes! So these merits are like gold ingots—hmm, even more precious than gold ingots! So they scramble for them. However, this must be dedicated with a sincere heart; only a sincere heart can be of use. Empty merit without sincerity is wanted by no one, and there is no merit.
The Burden of Attachments
Once the life of spreading the Dharma overseas began, I spent many years going in and out of Taiwan and various regions abroad. Every country has ghosts—that is, beings, spirits—which I knew from the start. Where is there no death? Where are there no six realms? Not only that, especially those who like to listen to the sutras and are compatible with the Dharma—they like to enter my body. Sometimes they were blocked by Dharma protectors, but sometimes they entered as soon as they wanted. This body is useful when it is useful, and not very useful when it is not. The important thing is whether they will harm you after entering. Fortunately, there is the Buddha’s teaching and Buddha-light. At that time, I still had some light on my body to protect myself.
So, there were attachments everywhere I went. My body was like the United Nations; there were attachments from Canada, Malaysia, and Singapore. Singapore liked me to stay there, but I could not stay; there were many on my legs. Then I returned to Taiwan and the mainland. Wow! The attachments on the mainland were numerous! Everyone swarmed toward me; they would drill into any place they could enter the body! Oh my! No wonder my body was tired at that time; it turned out there were many attachments. I did not know; who knew it was attachments? I thought it was because I walked too much during the day and was tired, especially since some places required climbing mountains and there were many followers? I thought it was that, but it was attachments. This cannot be blamed entirely on the attachments; one must be compassionate. They also had needs, wanted to be close, wanted to be near you. No wonder my body felt heavy at that time.
The Regret of Tangchi
Tangchi is a place I miss. What a pity! That place is a pity! It was not successfully established. My hometown—there are so many ghosts still waiting there, and they are ancient ghosts; they are still in that space. Traditional culture had a foundation there, but now it has dissipated. What a pity! This is also because everyone’s karmic fortune has not yet gathered. In fact, at that time, many beings were attached to my face, and many went to my head, but fortunately, my brain was still quite clear, and my face did not deform. Perhaps it was because my thoughts were upright. At that time, I only wanted to go to more places to say a few words, to let everyone know about the Pure Land, and to chant the Buddha-name more. This intention was certainly good, so I did not suffer any harm. This thought is too important, too important! You must never have a shred of selfishness—the selfishness of a private heart.
The United Nations
Furthermore, speaking of going to the United Nations—that actually shocked me. I was able to represent the country to attend these meetings of UNESCO at the United Nations. However, what I am mainly looking at now is the attachments. Wow! The United Nations has beings from every country; it has every kind of attached spirit. It turns out that every attendee has attachments on their body. This matter cannot be spread; we should just know it ourselves. If this spreads, it will frighten them, and then they will say Chin Kung is talking nonsense!
How do I see attachments? I understand it now; there are dark spots on the body. When people feel that a person’s complexion is not good, there are already too many attachments. Because they belong to the 'yin' and the yin energy is heavy, when they accumulate layer upon layer in the body, it causes the yang energy in that area to decrease, becoming a grey and dark place. Therefore, places with many grey and dark spots on the body are where there are many attachments and where illness is likely to occur. How do those with open eyes see it? I do not know if Practitioner Su—Su Fo—agrees with this view? This is what I see now. This is truly a great field of study.
During those days at the United Nations, I spent some time preparing materials and speeches. To put it nicely, it was for everyone to know our country and to know Teacher Chin Kung; but to put it bluntly, it was inevitable that I became tainted with a bit of fame. At that time, I felt in my heart, more or less, that I was quite good. This must not happen; monastics must be careful! Especially when everyone can say your name—do not say everyone, that is an exaggeration—if the public can mention your name and you have a bit of fame, be careful! At this time, when you are famous, your thoughts have already deviated, and attachments show no mercy. I discovered that there were more attachments at that time. As soon as I thought of this part, as soon as the thought arose, the attachments entered.
