The Purpose of Our Practice

Namo Amituofo, the compassionate teacher of all celestial and human beings, why do we engage in spiritual practice? We do so to guide all sentient beings away from the cycle of suffering and toward the light of liberation. In every passing second, you must never let the Buddha-name leave your heart. Why is this so essential? Because this is the path to purifying your own spirit. You must constantly contemplate the destination of all beings, holding them in your heart with deep concern and unwavering .

The Illusion of

Whenever you hold onto thoughts, you create a sense of an independent self. But why does this sense of self exist? What is it that truly disturbs your heart? It is the entanglement with the and that keeps you bound to the world of illusion. The true essence of spiritual practice is like flowing water. It rises and falls, much like the waves of your own mind. If you truly learn from the nature of flowing water, why not allow yourself to be clear, cool, and unburdened? If you always appear wounded by the world, what is it that you should reflect upon? In truth, when you realise that all phenomena are empty, you will see that there is nothing to hold onto.

Returning to the True Nature

Within the wisdom of your true self, everything is vast, empty, and pure. From this emptiness, the spring of Prajna Wisdom flows forth naturally. It is the natural state within the natural world. There is no past to cling to, and no future to fear; you must simply live fully in the present moment. When you do this, your natural countenance becomes clear, and your heart remains untainted by the dust of the world. Amidst the laws of and cause and effect, as long as you maintain a heart of Goodness, your words will naturally carry the weight of compassion. We walk this path side by side. When your heart is aligned with the Buddha's, the fruits of your practice will be the same. As you journey through the years, when your mind becomes perfectly clear and bright, you will find yourself already dwelling within the of Ultimate Bliss.

Recorded by the Buddha's disciple, Shi Fashin.
