The Subtle Thread of Demon Nature
An Interview with the Demon Crowds
Recorded on April 29, 2019, at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre

This is a record of an interview with the demon crowds who sought deliverance at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre in Australia. They reflect upon the nature of demon thoughts and the path to true sincerity. This interview was recorded on April 29, 2019, and transcribed by the chief writer, Venerable HaiZe.
Demon Crowds speak:
"Namo Amituofo. We are the demon crowds. Here in this Buddha-land, in the eyes of Practitioner Su, our demon nature simply cannot hide. It is like trying to conceal a shadow in the midday sun; there is nowhere for us to retreat. Think about it—that subtle demon nature hidden within your thoughts is something many practitioners never even notice. It is like a tiny, almost invisible thread floating in a cup of clear water. Because of that thread, it is so incredibly difficult to truly realise one's true nature."
The Invisible Thread of Demon Nature
"Why do we exist? Why do we have a space to linger? It is precisely because of that tiny thread. If that thread were gone, we would have no room to exist at all. We rely on these minute imperfections to find our foothold in your .
Fluctuations—that is our golden opportunity to manifest. If you can stop those fluctuations, if you can pull out that tiny thread, that is the moment of becoming an awakened being. When the mind is still, we have no purchase; when the mind is turbulent, we are right there with you."
The Battle of the Cells: Selfishness vs. Sincerity
"Why can we manifest? Because we are part of your cells. It is just as Practitioner Su says: Buddha-nature and demon nature coexist. They are both there, side by side, within you. Sincerity—that is what you lack. You have selfishness. When you ask a question, if it is rooted in selfishness, that is our cue. We can manifest and take over your thoughts. When your starting point is selfish, we have our chance.
But if your starting point is sincere, if you are truly selfless for the sake of all beings, we cannot manifest. Your Buddha-nature cells take the lead, and your whole body begins to glow with a light we cannot touch."
The Danger of Misunderstanding
"The problem is, most people cannot tell the difference between selfishness and sincerity. They think they are being sincere, but it is actually selfishness. If you cannot grasp such a subtle distinction, how can you possibly save beings? If you cannot tell whether the person you are dealing with is acting from Buddha-nature or demon nature, you are heading straight for the hells. Many monastics today do not understand this, which is why there are so many monks and nuns at the gates of hell. It is a simple, yet terrifying, law of cause and effect.
Practitioner Su is the only one we have seen who can truly see us, discern our nature, and most importantly, lead us to the Western Land. That is why we are willing to manifest and speak the truth. Namo Amituofo."
