The phrase "learning Buddhism" should be deeply familiar to anyone who walks this path. However, how many who don the monastic robes actually live in a way that is completely contrary to the very meaning of these words? On the surface, they may speak eloquently about the essence of the Buddha’s teachings, yet behind the scenes, they remain entangled in the mundane affairs of the world. They continue to chase fame and profit, gossiping about others and sowing discord. The tragic result of such behaviour is that not one of them has any true certainty of achieving rebirth in the of Ultimate Bliss. They lack true attainment, and their lack of fear regarding the cycle of rebirth reveals that they are merely using the name of a disciple of the Buddha to deceive others and gain material wealth.

The Weight of Karmic Debt

We must understand that all these actions are governed by . There is a profound warning in the teachings: "Eating a single grain of rice is as heavy as Mount Sumeru. If one does not attain the Way in this life, one must repay the debt with fur and horns." Without genuine, diligent practice, how can one possibly face the lay practitioners who have offered their sincere support? How can one face the beings and Bodhisattvas who wait in the void, hoping for salvation? True, internal change is far more significant and authentic than any external display of practice.

Transcending Human Discriminations

These are truths I only came to realise under the guidance of Practitioner Su. I have learned that there is no hierarchy between monastics and lay practitioners; such distinctions are merely human discriminations. The purpose of becoming a monastic is to better assist all beings to break through delusion and attain . It is a commitment to study the sutras with a focused heart, integrating their contents into one’s own conduct to influence others positively. When one achieves real change and experiences the true benefits of the Buddha’s teachings, it becomes evident. Even through the simple act of prostrations, one can see the results. The Buddha’s teachings are practical and grounded in reality; for every bit of effort you put in, you will receive a corresponding reward.

A Path of Real Connection

When Practitioner Su pointed out the areas where I needed to improve, it allowed me to see my shortcomings with absolute clarity. I understood exactly where I was failing and how I needed to adjust my path. Although I spent only a few short weeks in their presence, the benefits I received will last a lifetime. I sincerely hope that those who are connected by karmic affinity will come to Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre to listen to the talks given by Practitioner Su. These teachings are deeply connected to our daily lives and are truly authentic. This is my heartfelt message to you all.
