Concepts such as natural disposition, destiny, and the fixed nature of one's life are deeply embedded in the human heart. When we encounter obstacles in our emotions, careers, family lives, or future prospects, we often blame these misfortunes on a lack of or wealth in our destiny. I have observed that for some, this may seem to be the case. However, the vast majority of people can change the course of their lives through diligent effort in this lifetime. In particular, the Buddha’s teachings provide us with the methods to cultivate blessings, wealth, and wisdom. These teachings are intended to allow all beings to receive genuine, transformative benefits.
Unfortunately, these profound teachings are often misunderstood and distorted by modern people. This is especially evident in the realm of wealth. Many individuals pursue the practice of giving solely to acquire more material wealth or greater blessings to improve their standard of living. In doing so, they neglect the original intention that the Buddha wished to convey: that the practice of giving is meant to expand one's own mind-capacity and .
This misunderstanding leads many people within the Buddha’s gate to engage in the practice of giving wealth, yet they fail to receive any deep or lasting benefit. They remain trapped on the surface level of appearances. Some may even begin to slander the Buddha’s teachings when they do not see the results they desire. Instead of gaining the blessings they sought, they inadvertently create more , leading to a severe and counterproductive outcome.
To truly transform one's life, the act of giving must be performed with a heart that is free from attachment and free from seeking. Only when we give without the expectation of a return can we receive the subtle, invisible benefits that lead to genuine change. True generosity involves more than just the giving of material wealth; it encompasses a much broader scope, including the giving of our physical presence and energy to serve others, and the giving of our wisdom, time, and sincere thoughts to help others find peace and clarity.
When we can give in this way, we naturally begin to reverse the negative patterns of our destiny. When the duality of good and evil no longer dominates our intentions, the heavy weight of our karma begins to dissipate and resolve itself through the very process of giving. The eyes of heaven and earth witness our every action and intention.
I wish to emphasise that in all things, one should not act with a sense of seeking. This is especially true on the path of learning the Buddha’s teachings. As long as there is a desire for personal gain, it becomes very easy for one to be influenced by external interference or negative forces. This leads to regression in one's practice and, in the worst cases, the slandering of the Buddha’s teachings.
Before you begin your journey of learning the Buddha’s teachings, you should ask yourself: what is it that I am truly seeking? Only by clarifying your intention can you move forward on this path without deviation. This is a path that you must walk by yourself; no external force can help you achieve the ultimate goal of . Only through constant self-reflection, facing your challenges, and breaking through your own limitations can you walk this path with steadfast determination. Have faith in the Buddha, chant , and you will inevitably attain Buddhahood. Namo Amituofo.
