Amitabha Buddha's discourse:

Amitabha observes that beings in the world often create negative karma for the sake of food and suffer the evil consequences.

Human beings must work hard for their daily meals,

or suffer from the lack of food due to disasters or pandemics that make the land uncultivable,

dying from illness, hunger, or famine.

The Five Desires—wealth, sex, fame, food, and sleep—are the five roots of the hells,

'food' is one of them.

For the desire for 'food', human beings create the causes to enter the hells,

and suffer the evil retribution of punishment therein.

Even ghost realm beings need to absorb the energy from food to survive,

or enter human bodies to attach to the energy within the human body to gain vitality.

Birds and beasts die for food; this is even clearer among animals,

who harm each other to seize food, their spirits remaining in a state of confusion, unable to be clear.

Thus, they pass life after life with no time for liberation.

As for the demon crowds, in order to obtain the energy for survival,

they incite strife or war among the demon crowds and between planets; it is truly suffering!

Seeing that beings suffer so much for the sake of food, Amitabha made an Ultimate Vow in the Forty-eight Great Vows:

'The Vow of Spontaneous Clothing and Food': 'When I attain Buddhahood, those who are born in My Land will have all the food, clothing, and various offerings they require appear as they wish, with all their desires fulfilled,' to relieve the suffering of beings who lack food and clothing.

Therefore, for the being of the Western Land in the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss, who are spirits without a body,

if they still have the habit of eating, when they think of food,

a hundred flavours of food will immediately manifest,

allowing the being of the Western Land to feel joy and satisfaction upon seeing the colours and smelling the fragrance.

This is 'sustenance by thought'.

The being of the Western Land possesses a pure body; they have no need for food, produce no waste, and their bodies and minds are soft and supple.

This is Amitabha complying with the habits of beings, following the thoughts and needs of beings,

allowing what is thought of to manifest,

so that they do not give rise to worry or distress but feel satisfied, dwelling in the light of ultimate bliss.

In the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss,

everywhere reflects Amitabha’s compliance, 'following the hearts of beings and responding to the measure of their knowledge',

and His "skillful means".

This is also a wonderful method of practice to follow the Buddha in saving the world and beings, fulfilling the wishes of sentient beings, and complying with beings.
