The Endless Cycle of Suffering

On the eleventh of July, 2017, a disciple humbly approached the Buddha, seeking guidance on the nature of physical suffering. The disciple asked, "May the Buddha, in His infinite , grant us teachings to alleviate the pain of sickness." Namo Amituofo then provided this profound discourse.

The is boundless, just as space is infinite and time is without limit. Beings are countless, and the six realms of existence are endless. The four sages exist beyond the constraints of time, while the spirit is without a beginning, and the heart is without an end. We are trapped in the cycle of birth, aging, sickness, and death. When will this ever cease? It is a suffering within suffering, a cycle that seems to have no conclusion.

We possess this physical body, which is often seen as a great burden, yet it is also a great blessing. It is a blessing because, while we have this body, we have the opportunity to accumulate merit and perform acts of Goodness. However, it is also because we have this body that we must endure the heavy weight of sickness.

as a Vessel for Merit and

Whether we seek to heal our physical pain or soothe the wounds of the heart, we must find a way to bring peace to both the body and the spirit. Sickness manifests in countless forms. Within our physical bodies exists a kingdom, an infinitely layered space. This space is connected to our many past lives, spanning different eras and locations. How many people throughout history have truly understood this? Every form has , and our individual consciousness is deeply interconnected with the consciousness of others.

When illness arises, we naturally seek treatment. Healing requires the right Causal Conditions, and it often takes time to resolve. We spend wealth on medicine, yet every illness is different in its severity and urgency. As a practitioner, one must realise that the three thousand afflictions are like falling leaves—they have a beginning, and they have led us to this very moment.

The Hidden World Within Our Cells

The karmic debts we have accumulated are repaid through this very body. The laws of karma and cause and effect are precise; not a single detail is overlooked. From our internal organs—the liver, heart, spleen, lungs, and kidneys—to our hair, saliva, muscles, bones, and tendons, every part of us is subject to the influence of our past actions. When we attempt to heal one injury, we may inadvertently cause another. Yet, when Namo Amituofo, the Great Physician, appears, the Causal Conditions and their results are revealed.

If you hold the Buddha in your heart and truly believe in His ability to help, you will naturally receive the Buddha's power, which acts as a blessing and a form of healing. Sickness is regulated by the heart. If the heart is compliant and sincere, one can repent for the negative karma created in the past. The illness we experience today is born from these Causal Conditions. When we invite our to come forward, we can coordinate and resolve these conflicts.

Healing Through Repentance and Compassion

Through sincere repentance, the severity of an illness can be reduced, or it may even be eradicated entirely. By participating in the , we help these beings find their way to the . You must understand that repentance is the most important step. We must invite these beings, ask for their forgiveness, and place repentance at the forefront of our practice.

Before the Buddha, perform ten prostrations to express your gratitude for the Buddha's grace. We have all been guilty of killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, and intoxication; we have been driven by the pursuit of wealth, lust, fame, food, and sleep; we have been clouded by greed, anger, delusion, arrogance, and doubt; and we have been swayed by , anger, love, hatred, and desire. Each of these creates boundless karma, and our karmic creditors are equally endless. How, then, could sickness ever have a stopping point?

The Connection Between Mind and Body

We say the body is composed of fifty trillion cells, but in reality, there are far more. Unless these cells have been revitalised, filled with transparency and joy, they remain the dwelling place of our karmic creditors. These beings share in our joys, angers, sorrows, and happiness. If there is a resonance between our intentions and theirs, the current situation will manifest. Whether it is collective karma or individual karma, the symptoms vary in intensity. Our mental notes and habits are linked to the state of our cells—whether they are pure or impure depends on the state of our hearts.

When the heart is filled with Goodness, the cells are clear; when the heart is filled with evil, the cells become turbid. The heart and the cells are intimately connected. The karma we have created determines where our karmic creditors reside, which in turn determines where our symptoms manifest. interact with —eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind—responding to sights, sounds, smells, tastes, touch, and phenomena. Every interaction is as swift as lightning, and not a single detail is missed.

The Path to the Western Pure Land

Once they enter the land of , they have encountered a magnificence that is difficult to find. Namo Amituofo will come to heal them. I hope all beings connected by karmic affinity will cherish this rare opportunity. It is only because you have chanted the name of Namo Amituofo in the past or in this life that this affinity has manifested today.
