Dialogue with Namo Amituofo on the Nature of Affinity
Teachings from Namo Amituofo
Recorded on July 22, 2017

The Infinite Nature of the Heart
Throughout the ages, across the vast and boundless expanse of the universe, all phenomena undergo the inevitable cycle of formation, existence, decay, and emptiness. These physical manifestations are always limited in their scope and duration. However, the heart is truly infinite. Concepts of time and space are merely constructs that exist entirely within your own heart. When these impressions are stored within the storehouse , they await the right Causal Conditions to manifest. Once your Six Roots perceive the external world, they immediately transform into the Six Consciousnesses, and the laws of and cause and effect are set into motion.
The Web of Interconnectedness
Everything in your life is formed based on these Causal Conditions. When conditions arise, things gather; when conditions disperse, they vanish. This applies to everything you encounter, including:
- The dust, sand, and microscopic particles that make up the physical world. The water molecules and the very cells and bacteria that compose your body.Your internal organs and the sensory inputs that enter through your Six Roots. The people, objects, and events you encounter in your daily life. The affinity and Buddhist affinity you share with others. The images, words, and actions that define your interactions. The emotions you feel, such as , anger, sorrow, and happiness. The shared experiences of group cultivation and the pain of illness and suffering.
Although these phenomena appear different in form, they all share a common origin: they are all dependent upon the heart. Because they are born from affinity, they must interact. This interaction may last for only a fleeting second, or it may span across many lifetimes. Whether it is for this life alone or extending into the future, the nature of your affinity becomes the environment in which you live.
Transcending Duality
Whether you perceive an affinity as good or evil, it is ultimately an illusion. Within the realm of affinity, the distinctions between Goodness and bad are essentially the same. Consider the nature of gain and loss:
- Is there truly a difference between gaining and losing? If you gain, you have also lost; if you lose, you have also gained. Are they not, in essence, one and the same?
The same applies to success and failure. Failure is merely another form of success, and success is not separate from failure. When you can smile at the unfolding of these affinities and accept them with a warm heart, you will no longer distinguish between yourself and others. When others have something, you feel joy for them; when you have something, they feel happiness for you. You and others share the same experience. The environment you live in and you inhabit are, in truth, fused into one.
The Illusion of Separation
You may ask where these boundaries between this world and other realms exist. They are merely the limitations of your own eyes. This world and other worlds exist simultaneously. The ten directions and the three periods of time are not separate entities; they are merely different words for the same reality, all contained within the heart. If you feel fear or anxiety, ask yourself where these arise. They are merely obstacles created by the mind. When you achieve true understanding, these obstacles will dissolve.
The Eternal Spirit
People often feel helpless in the face of life and death. But where do life and death truly reside? They are merely the decay of the physical body, while the spirit itself is eternal and never perishes. You may view your family members as your closest kin, but what is the nature of this closeness? Often, it is merely the settling of past debts. Once the debt is cleared, the connection may fade. Wealth is often considered precious, but why? If you use wealth to benefit others, you will accumulate true merit and virtue. If you only seek to possess it for yourself, it will last for only one lifetime, leaving behind only karmic seeds in your storehouse consciousness.
to the Truth
How should you view the grievances and debts of the past? If someone harms you in this life, it is likely because you harmed them in a previous life. Everything in this world exists in a state of flux. Whether you have much or little, you must remain at ease. In the six realms of existence, there are countless varieties of beings. You live within an illusion, yet you believe that everything you experience is real. You must learn to transform this illusion into truth. Only when you realise that all things are illusory can you truly understand the nature of reality. Within this illusion, there is endless suffering and joy, endless sorrow and happiness. Between confusion and awakening, you are often lost in the illusion, repeating the same cycles. Only in awakening can you see the truth.
The Within
You must encourage yourself to persist. Do not remain stagnant in the muddy waters of the world. Even in the midst of impurity, you can see the lotus flower blooming. The world and the Pure Land are not separate; the Pure Land can be found right here if you truly awaken. Namo Amituofo truly abides here. What you see and hear is beyond ordinary thought and discussion. It is the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
Recorded by the Buddha's disciple, Venerable HaiZe.
