The Illusion of Control
Teachings from Venerable KaiLin

August 4, 2019.
Through our diligent practice during this period, we have observed that every member of the fourfold assembly has achieved varying degrees of purification. During this process of purification, sentient beings often begin to interfere and create obstacles, seeking to hinder our continued progress. Just as when I, Venerable KaiLin, first began my practice of prostrations, I encountered layer upon layer of tests and obstructions. Without a firm belief and a sincere vow, it would have been impossible to overcome these examinations from sentient beings.
Navigating the Obstacles on the Path of Purification
Every test manifests in different ways and forms, yet the vast majority are related to worldly matters: worldly objects, worldly emotions, and worldly affairs. Furthermore, we experience various physical situations, such as lethargy, restlessness, dizziness, entering other spaces, illness, and soreness. These physical situations serve as a constant reminder to the fourfold assembly: the control of your physical body is not in your own hands. Instead, it is held by the spirits and your . They want you to move east, and you move east; they want you to move west, and you move west.
The Illusion of Physical Sovereignty
How many people are aware of this reality? How many have paid attention to such matters? How many choose to avoid discussing it entirely? There is no method to evade the demands and control of these karmic creditors. The only way is to truly face these beings and confront the issues within your own body. You must change your habitual tendencies and your temper. Only then can you achieve a genuine transformation, rather than a superficial one. What is the use of a bright, polished exterior if the interior is decaying and foul?
Often, being controlled is not necessarily a bad thing; it is a warning signal. As long as you can face it, change, and repent, everything can be resolved and dissolved. You must hold firmly to the Truth without deviation. Do not be biased towards Goodness or evil, and do not make distinctions between high and low. Only then can you walk further and longer on this path of practice.
The Heart’s Transformation and the Light of Truth
Facing the weaknesses in your own inner world is the greatest form of repenting and change for your karmic creditors. Not everyone is willing to admit their own mistakes, but only by having the courage to face them can you find the opportunity for change. Only then will sentient beings truly resolve their conflicts with you. Verbal repenting has no real meaning; it is the transformation of the heart that provides the greatest benefit. Let go of all worldly mindsets, concerns about face, attitudes, and thoughts. This is the greatest help you can give yourself.
In practice, there is no such thing as status or hierarchy. There is only constant and diligent practice. This is the greatest compassion you can offer to all beings. Namo Amituofo.
