This is a record of an interview with Lay Practitioner Yu Xianjun, the grandmother of Lay Practitioner Peng Hong. She sought at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre in Australia and now resides in the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. This account reflects upon her life and her journey toward liberation. Recorded by the chief writer, Shi Faxi, on November 3, 2023.
Lay Practitioner Yu Xianjun speaks:
". I am Yu Xianjun. Throughout my entire life, from childhood to old age, I simply lived by fulfilling my duties. In the era I was born into, traditional moral foundations were heavy, and the belief that men were superior to women was deeply ingrained. From the time I was a young girl until I was married off, I was bound by the rigid traditional values of that old society. Born into such an environment, my life was destined to be one of hardship. Even though my life was filled with suffering, I accepted my fate and worked diligently, all for the sake of my family.
I did not achieve anything remarkable in my life. I failed to raise my children properly, and as a result, they continued to create even after they grew up. I was not a good mother, and I feel truly ashamed of this." (She covers her face and weeps.) "My children each had their own strong personalities, but it was I who failed to guide them correctly. I did not provide a good example for them to follow, which is why their lives are so full of suffering now. This is entirely my fault.
For so many years, my own life was not easy. My legs were weak, and I lacked the strength to move about freely. This was my retribution for failing to set a proper example for my children. In truth, I never imagined that one day I would be able to leave that environment. When that day finally arrived, my heart was filled with a sense of preciousness and deep emotion.
I am deeply grateful to my granddaughter for performing the Chao Du for me, which gave me the opportunity to be saved. Now, beyond repenting for my past mistakes, I know that I must practise diligently. Here, I have encountered the truly magnificent , and I know that I will be able to change myself.
Through this message, I also want my descendants to know that the laws of karma and cause and effect in this world are truly terrifying. You must all be careful! Now that you see where I am, please do not let yourselves suffer as I did—it is far too painful!
I am blessed now, for I have attained rebirth in the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. I will be watching over you from here, and I hope that one day we can all be reunited in this place. The magnificent Dharma practised by Practitioner Su is real; you must all study it with sincerity!"
"Yu Xianjun, bowing in gratitude. Namo Amituofo."
