From the Depths of Suffering to the Western Pure Land
An Interview with Xu Youhui, Sister of Xu Hengbin
Recorded on October 23, 2019

This is a record of an interview with Xu Youhui, also known as Xiao Hui, who sought at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre in Australia. She now resides in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. This account reflects upon her experiences in the human world and her subsequent rebirth. Recorded by the chief writer, Venerable HaiZe, on October 23, 2019.
Xu Youhui speaks:
"Namo Amituofo. I am Xu Youhui, or Xiao Hui. It is hard to believe that after so many years, I—a person who suffered so much in the human world and was saved by the grace of Practitioner Su to be sent to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss—am now speaking to you from that very place. It is truly an inconceivable matter. Practitioner Su’s practice is something that I, as a junior, deeply admire. Regardless of whether those who see this believe my words, if it inspires even one person to chant 'Namo Amituofo,' planting that into their , then it is worth it! No matter how much time passes, they will have the opportunity to be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss."
A Life Shattered by
"At that time, I was a married woman and a mother. My peaceful life was shattered by a bomb—my husband’s affair. Once a third party enters a marriage, the affection between husband and wife changes; no matter what you do, it can never return to its original sweetness. After many painful arguments, and because of the child the third party was carrying, I resolutely ended a marriage that others had once envied.
"Divorce was the full stop in my marriage. From then on, I raised my child alone, with my family as my greatest pillar of support. I had a job and an income, allowing my child to live the life of a single-parent household. This outcome was certainly not what I had envisioned when I first chose marriage. I tried my best to bury my pain in busy work.
"In my thirties, I often felt sharp pains in my breasts. When I performed a self-examination, I felt something was wrong. I went to the hospital and received the devastating news: breast cancer. It felt like a bolt from the blue. Why was I being subjected to such tragic events one after another? I resisted in my heart; I was angry, resentful, and furious. But the merciless disease would not stop. I endured the agony of surgery and chemotherapy."
The Turning Point at the Temple
"At that time, my brother, Xiao Bin, knew Practitioner Su. Through his introduction, Practitioner Su suggested I stay at the temple for a while. That was the turning point of my life, and the reason I am now in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. I began listening to Practitioner Su’s talks, understanding the truth of the six realms of rebirth and the laws of karma and cause and effect. I began to know Namo Amituofo and the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
"There was a period when I slept poorly. Following Practitioner Su’s advice, I kept paper and pen by my bed to record any dreams. One night, after falling asleep, I saw a man who had once been devoted to me, only to have his heart turn elsewhere. To help me vent my anger, my godfather set a trap during a meeting, causing him to drink poison and die. It was passed off as an accidental death. I woke up in a cold sweat, realising this was a living story of cause and effect. It had just changed its appearance, but it was the same soul suffering the after reincarnation.
"My husband in this lifetime was the man who had made a mistake after being drugged, leading to our broken marriage. My breast cancer was the retribution for causing that man’s death in a past life due to emotional entanglement. I wept—I cried bitterly, filled with sorrow and regret. I had no right to blame my ex-husband; it was that man coming to seek revenge that caused this chain of events. It was all my own doing. Practitioner Su had actually seen that man and my past life, which is why she asked me to record my dreams, unravelling this karmic debt between past and present lives."
Deliverance from the Flames of Suffering
"I repented before the public, deeply apologising to the man I had harmed in the past. Under Practitioner Su’s guidance, he was willing to accept Chao Du and resolve the conflict. I worked hard to listen to the Sutras, chant the Buddha’s name, and recite the Sutras to dedicate the merit. Not only to make amends for my sins but also to calm my heart. My condition stabilised during my time at the temple, but I eventually had to return to face reality.
"Back home, I started working again. Not knowing how much time I had left and needing to support my child, I worked hard to save money. I forgot Practitioner Su’s instruction to introduce Namo Amituofo to others, and my illness returned. Following my family’s wishes, I went back to the hospital for chemotherapy. When I saw Practitioner Su again, I was already in the hospital; my face and body were swollen, and I was no longer recognisable.
"I knew my time was short, but a force compelled me to say, 'Save me.' I said these two words with great difficulty and weakness. Practitioner Su told me, 'You are not dead; only your body is broken. Chant the Buddha’s name and go to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. People do not die!' It was as if I had been given a shot of adrenaline. I chanted the Buddha’s name in my heart, even if it felt faint. I developed a fever, fell into a coma, and passed away. During those hazy days, my spirit wandered like a headless fly. I saw my beloved son, but he didn’t respond when I called his name. I saw my family busy with my funeral, but I felt no sense of clarity. I still felt heavy-headed and feverish, hiding in a corner of my home, weeping.
"I don’t know how much time passed, but I saw a light and heard someone calling my name. It was Practitioner Su’s voice. I stopped crying. That light brought me to a bright place. Practitioner Su’s voice continued to come through: 'Xu Youhui, Xiao Hui, you must chant the Buddha’s name. Chant Namo Amituofo. You must chant and repent with tears; the Buddha will come to lead you to be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.' It was as if I had awakened from a great dream. I chanted with all my might, shouting 'Namo Amituofo.' I wept loudly and chanted loudly, pouring all my grievances, repentance, and helplessness into the Buddha’s name. I begged the Buddha to save me. Then, a pair of hands reached out from the light, and I felt as if I were flying. In an instant, I arrived at an even brighter place."
Arrival in the Western Pure Land
"I stopped crying. The sound of the Buddha’s name all around was so peaceful and beautiful. My heart calmed down. Where was this? It was so bright, so beautiful. A voice echoed around me: 'This is the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss!' I was stunned! When I regained my , the scenes of the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss and Namo Amituofo that Practitioner Su had described in class appeared one by one. This really was the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. I opened my mouth wide, unable to believe it was real. Then I cried—I cried loudly. They were tears of and immense gratitude, flowing continuously from my eyes. The Greatly Compassionate Namo Amituofo had not forgotten a poor person like me and had brought me to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. I knelt down and kowtowed continuously, tears streaming down my face. This was the end of my long journey; I had truly arrived in the West! And so, I settled down in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
"I understood! That was a that Practitioner Su was conducting for everyone. Those hands that brought me to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss were the hands of Namo Amituofo—they were Practitioner Su’s hands. Practitioner Su is a manifestation of Namo Amituofo, which is why she had the power to save me. The speed at which I flew was my lotus flower from my daily chanting. Although it was small and budding, lacking strength, it was empowered by the Buddha’s strength to bring me back to the West. Even then, Practitioner Su could use her vow power and mental focus to manifest her and lead beings back to the West, but she never mentioned it, and no one knew. It wasn't until now, nine years later, that Practitioner Su has made public her ability to lead everyone to be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss."
The Beauty of the Pure Land
"I am grateful to Practitioner Su for allowing me to accept this interview and share the magnificent ending of my rebirth in the West, despite my past being too painful to look back upon. My story is just one small story among the many beings Practitioner Su has saved. If this can help those who see this text—whether they are living in the human world or are beings who have already lost their bodies—to understand the true deeds of Namo Amituofo and Practitioner Su in saving suffering beings, and if they are willing to listen to the Sutras, learn Buddhism, chant the Buddha’s name, draw close to the Buddha, and make a vow to be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, then they can be saved and change their fate of reincarnation. That would be the best thing possible!
"The beauty of the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, besides the Seven-Jeweled Pools and the Eight Meritorious Waters mentioned in the Sutras, includes music that one never tires of hearing. The sounds of flowing water, the wind moving through the trees, and the birds singing are all chanting the Buddha’s name in melodies you love. Listening to Namo Amituofo give Dharma talks is my greatest joy; listening to the Sutras is truly an enjoyment. Eating, drinking, wearing clothes, and sleeping—here, you don't even have to think about it; everything is provided. Gradually, I forgot about those things. There is no darkness, only light. I don’t know how much time has passed since then, but when I had this thought, the numbers nine to ten naturally surfaced. I realised it had been nine to ten years ago.
"In the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, everything is governed by thought. As long as a thought arises, it can be fulfilled. Gradually, you find you don't want for anything, because everything is already there, and it is so beautiful and perfect. You don't think about anything either, because everything has nothing to do with you. You just listen quietly and purely. You don't need to think or contemplate; just listen quietly, without any thoughts, and you will be filled with Dharma joy. Everything is so natural. This is the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. You can enjoy everything here; it is not stealing or snatching. There is no distinction between 'you' and 'me.' What is yours is also mine. This is oneness! That’s right, the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss is a world of oneness, the world of the Buddha. I live in the Buddha’s world, and one day I will also become a Buddha.
"In the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, if I have a thought about my past life, it naturally surfaces. At first, I would look at it, but now, I don’t look, nor do I want to know, because it is all illusory and false. It has already passed, and I am not the one in control; karma is in control. I only want to listen to the Sutras now, listening to the Buddha speak the Infinite Life Sutra of immeasurable meaning before the Buddha. I don’t know how long I have been sitting before the Buddha; the Buddha has not finished speaking the Sutra, and I am still listening."
A Message to All Beings
"Everything in the human world seems so far away, yet so close. Just as Practitioner Su thought of me and wanted me to accept this interview, the moment she thought of 'Xiao Hui,' it was as if my name had been called. At the same time, I knew that Practitioner Su in the human world was calling me, asking me to tell my story. Almost simultaneously, I was able to transmit my message so that the Venerable could record it. Everything is so fast and can happen at the same time. In fact, in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, there is no distance of time or space. Human time does not exist here. Because there are no thoughts or mental notes, it is so pure that all incoming thoughts can be seen clearly, without any errors. Every single thing here is so inconceivable to the human world!
"Xiao Hui hopes that everyone can come to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. Practitioner Su is the manifestation of Namo Amituofo in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, the messenger of the West. Follow her, listen to her words, and you will be able to come to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. Just as we listen to the Buddha speak the Sutras before the Buddha, we will know the infinite true meanings. No matter how long it takes, one day we will realise Buddhahood. Xiao Hui wants to thank everyone she knows, especially Practitioner Su, my family, my brother Xiao Bin, the good men and women of the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre, and my ex-husband. Without you, there would be no Xiao Hui today. The Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre was originally called the Fragrant Light Room, but now, having received the recognition and help of Namo Amituofo, it has been named by the Buddha as the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre. This is truly a tremendous blessing for all beings.
"Practitioner Su, whom everyone now calls 'Buddha Su'—even the Buddha addresses her as such—is truly deserving of the title! Because Practitioner Su used her precious human body to realise her true nature and achieve the Dharma Body to perform Chao Du, she has already saved immeasurable and boundless beings to be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. Passing away and leaving the human world is just the breaking of a body that can no longer be used. As long as the spirit can reach the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, there is no death. Just like Xiao Hui, this is my testimony from the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
"Namo Amituofo and the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss truly exist. Rebirth in the West is not death. The Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre and Practitioner Su can truly help everyone regulate their hearts, heal their bodies, leave suffering behind, and be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. This is something more people need to know. Xiao Hui sincerely hopes that all beings will no longer reincarnate and will all have the opportunity to chant the Buddha’s name, be saved, and be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
