The Labyrinth of Mortal Suffering
What exactly is this state of being 'trapped' that we so often experience? It manifests as a persistent cloud of afflictions, worries, and heavy emotional states. It is found in the stubborn personality traits and habits that we find so difficult to change. It is the state of falling into a dull, drowsy space during our practice—a state that seems impossible to improve. It is the helplessness we feel when facing the inevitable suffering of aging, sickness, and the approaching fear of death. Ultimately, it is the profound suffering of being caught in the cycle of rebirth.
It seems that both ordinary people and those who have begun their spiritual practice find it nearly impossible to escape these traps, these states of mind, and these heavy . We may intellectually understand that our afflictions are illusory, that our worries are empty, and that our emotional reactions are transient. Yet, despite this knowledge, we continue to be plagued by them. We know that our negative habits and the tendency to fall into a dull, unconscious state are major obstacles to our practice, yet we delay in correcting them within our hearts and our actions. We know that aging, sickness, death, and the cycle of rebirth are sources of suffering, yet we remain unable to break free. This is the hallmark of a being burdened by heavy .
The Futility of Self-Reliance
For those in such a state, relying solely on one's own power is insufficient to resolve these difficulties. Consequently, beings burdened by karma can only drift through their lives, passing day after day and year after year in this state of entrapment. When this life ends, the difficulties remain unresolved, and as they move into the next life, these same burdens follow them. Thus, they continue to tumble through the six realms of existence, trapped in a cycle of suffering with no end in sight.
However, if one is fortunate enough to encounter the Gate and the practice of chanting the Buddha's name, there is hope. One must first come to a clear understanding that alone is inadequate to face the difficulties brought about by karma and the complex web of and the causes and effects. If we encounter good causes, good conditions, and good fruits, we should naturally accept them with . But when we face negative causes, negative conditions, and negative fruits, they inevitably bring pain to our body, mind, and spirit.
The Compassionate Light of Namo Amituofo
When these difficult situations arise, our practice will inevitably encounter barriers. It is only by relying on the Buddha's that we can find a path to resolution. Within the sacred name of Namo Amituofo lies the majestic power, the merit, and the compassionate blessings of . As we chant, each repetition of the Buddha-name acts as a vessel, allowing the majestic power, merit, and of Amitabha Buddha to flow directly into the heart and spirit of the practitioner.
When the heart of a sentient being becomes calm and peaceful, the interference from is naturally reduced. If we can develop the wisdom to understand the resentment and the needs of these beings, we can invite them to find a place of refuge where their suffering can be resolved. This is the perfect opportunity to resolve past grievances and karmic debts. Through the Buddha-name, we can dissolve our afflictions, worries, and emotional burdens.
The Path to Ultimate Purity
The name of Namo Amituofo contains infinite compassion. By receiving the illumination of Amitabha Buddha’s light, our impurities are extinguished, goodness is cultivated, and our worries are resolved. Chanting the Buddha's name allows us to stop our wandering thoughts, subdue our deluded mind, dissolve our worries, and purify both our hearts and our actions.
As the saying goes, when the mind is pure, the land is pure. In a pure land, are also purified. This is the true mark of success in one's practice. Namo Amituofo.
