The disciple approached with a heavy heart, acknowledging the immeasurable and boundless suffering of all beings. The disciple understood that every word spoken by the Buddha is intended to guide beings out of the vast ocean of birth and death, helping them to leave suffering behind and find happiness through rebirth in the of Ultimate Bliss. The disciple humbly prayed for the Buddha's compassionate teachings.
Namo Amituofo offered this profound discourse: The world you inhabit is fundamentally illusory. Its very essence is transient and empty. When you truly recognise this fact, you will no longer be wounded by the shifting circumstances of life. All the competition and striving you see in the world are ultimately futile and yield no lasting fruit. To maintain a clear and bright heart is the most important task for any practitioner.
When you compare yourself to others—looking up at those you deem superior or down at those you deem inferior—your heart becomes like water disturbed by waves. Why must you subject yourself to such turmoil? You must cultivate a state of deep meditative concentration. When your concentration is as steady as an immovable mountain, no matter how chaotic the external environment becomes, you will remain unharmed. You will dwell in a state of cool, refreshing clarity and true freedom.
To realise your true self, you must prioritise the cultivation of Wisdom (Prajna). If Wisdom (Prajna) has not yet manifested, you must rely on rational understanding. Emotions are the source of your wounds; they cloud your judgement and bind you to the cycle of rebirth. You must cut through these emotional attachments and embrace the light of Wisdom (Prajna). Only then can you attain true, authentic Wisdom (Prajna).
Everything in this world is governed by Causal Conditions. When conditions mature, people and things gather together; when those conditions fade, they inevitably separate. In this process, there is no inherent right or wrong, and there is no place for grudges or resentment. The hatred and sorrow you experience today are often the result of past harms you have inflicted upon others, or that others have inflicted upon you. You have been consuming one another in a cycle of retribution that has no end. The only way to break this cycle is through the power of .
You have once possessed great compassion and great mercy, but you have forgotten this original nature. This forgetfulness is the root of your obstacles and difficulties. You must quickly seek to reclaim that original heart. All the myriad phenomena of the world are created by the mind, and because they are created by the mind, they can be transformed by the mind.
The truth is hidden within the dream of life. You must break through the illusion to see the true reality. Within this dream, you must perform the work of the Buddha. By breaking the illusion, you will find your true self, which has been there all along.
As time passes and circumstances shift, everything eventually returns to emptiness. Within this emptiness, there are myriad things, yet you must not cling to any of them. You must sever your delusions and discard your discriminations. When you realise that all things are ultimately empty, you have touched the truth.
When you dwell in the truth, you will be able to distinguish clearly between your true self and your false, wandering mind. If you remain lost in the illusory, everything you see will be false. When you cannot distinguish between the true and the false, you only increase your karmic suffering. I counsel all people in this world to understand the purpose of their lives. Follow the natural flow of the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way, and do not struggle against it. Resistance is useless and only leads to more complaints and sorrow. Observing your own heart is the most important practice; observing the is the foundation of your journey.
If you suffer from poverty, understand that it is the fruit of past causes. When you must endure such suffering, keep your heart steady and concentrated. This will prevent you from continuing to suffer in the future and allow you to be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. If you enjoy wealth, accept it with a heart full of gratitude and use it to create further . Accumulating Goodness within your blessings is the only correct path. Do not let your heart wander, for it is easy to stray onto crooked paths. If you do stray, turn back immediately. Everything you have ever done, whether good or evil, is recorded in your ; not a single grain of is ever lost. As for what comes next, simply walk the path straight ahead.
This discourse was recorded by the Buddha's disciple, Venerable HaiZe.
